Dear Jan,
Anyone who has taken the time to read the 9-11 Commission Report,
will back George Bush. The Commission flatly stated that we are at
war with an enemy that's not going to negotiate; it has to be taken
out.
I've read the report. There are no recommendations about fighting
a more "sensitive" war against terrorism or requiring the US to seek
approval from the UN before defending our nation. Anna Eshoo
voted against the President's War Resolution and in favor of a
resolution requiring the US to work with the United Nations.
Not only is there is a clear distinction between our approaches
to terrorism, but also in the practical steps that need to be taken
today! Terrorism, Taxes and Teachers (education) are the key
focuses of my campaign. On all of these issues, the differences
between Anna Eshoo's and my positions are crystal clear. Please visit
my website to learn more.
Chris Haugen, Candidate for US Congress 14th District
| Meeting vs. Taking Action |
In her last email on August 4th to constituents, Anna Eshoo
made much ado about how she was driving congressional leaders
to immediately convene Congress to address the 9-11 Commission
recommendations. In fact, the House Intelligence Committee, on
which Anna sits, was called into hearings for 4 days in
August.
While it is unclear that America is safer because of the
August hearings, it is clear that we would be much safer if
Eshoo would support HR 2671. So far she has refused to
support this bill that would strengthen enforcement of illegal
entry into the US.
The 9-11 Commission Report states that 500,000 people
enter our country illegally every year and recommends that
the US should use law enforcement to intercept terrorists
as they attempt to travel to our country. The CLEAR Act
(HR 2671) would address the growing criminal and illegal alien
problem by allowing over 600,000 state and local law
enforcement officials to enforce immigration laws during the
course of their regular duties. Currently, the Bureau of
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (BICE) has only 2,000
interior enforcement agents.

| Chris Haugen's Perspective |
The US was attacked on 9/11 and radical Islamic
terrorists are determined to kill Americans again. After a
year of hearings and study, the 9-11 Commission has come to
the same conclusion.
I believe that the number one responsibility of the
federal government is to provide for the common defense. By
all means we should seek to have the cooperation of other
countries who have a vested interest in fighting
terrorism.
I applaud Pakistani President Musharraf for putting his
life on the line to stand against terrorism and, likewise,
Tony Blair, for taking a tough stand despite political
opposition at home.
Under no circumstances should our government put world
opinion ahead of protecting our country from terrorism. On
this issue, Anna Eshoo and I differ significantly.
