| LEO DAVENPORT ON THE ISSUES
Like so many of you, I am concerned about the future of our state. You can count on me to champion these issues in Carson City:
Education
Taxes
Health Care
Education
Clark County is growing at
an astounding rate and our education system must
keep pace. Over the past five years, we
built 65 new schools in Clark County; this past
year alone saw 24,000 new children added to our
education system. We must fund education
at a level that can accommodate the needs of our
growing population of children; we must provide
our educators with the tools and budget they need
to teach our children. This budget should
be the result of careful analysis and should never
become a hostage to political partisan games.
Our kids deserve better from their government.
I wholeheartedly support the Gibbons Education
First Initiative proposal.

Taxes
The 2003 Legislature gave us
the largest tax increase in Nevada history. Worse,
this increase took two special sessions and nearly
caused our schools to delay opening as the education
budget was held hostage to tax increases. Economic
prosperity results from careful planning and low
taxes. We need a tax rate and tax basis that encourages
growth in businesses, jobs, and income levels.
I really believe, as former President Reagan said,
that no country ever taxed itself into prosperity.
Health Care
In the 2003 session, the Democrats bowed to special interest groups and blocked legislation that would have helped stem out-of-control insurance premiums. My opponent was one of them: she favored increasing out-of-pocket costs for doctor visits rather than controls on a legal system gone haywire. High health care costs and large health insurance premium increases cripple families and business. We need common-sense legal reforms so that we can have affordable access to health care in this State. As a business owner, I know all too well how the cost of health insurance has taken such coverage out of the reach of so many Nevadans. Premiums go up and benefits go down. Far too many of our families and our seniors cannot afford health care coverage and far too many businesses are being forced to choose between giving raises or maintaining their employee health plans. Something must change.
