LEO ON EDUCATION
We must fund education at a level that can accommodate the needs of our growing population of children.   Funding should be the result of careful analysis and should never become a hostage to political partisan games.

ABOUT LEO DAVENPORT
  • Married 32 years to Glenda
  • One daughter, Kimberly, a Registered Nurse
  • Occupation:   Owner/President GFD Investments
  • Military Service:   U.S. Air Force 1971-1974

Nevada has been my home since the mid 1970s.   I chose to live here, raise my family here, and operate my business here because I think this state has always embodied the best in American values.

As a member of this community, I've donated my time and energy to making this a better place to live.   At times, that has meant serving as a volunteer EMT or volunteering as a pilot for search and rescue missions.   Other times, that has meant testifying in the legislature concerning regulations needed to curb abuses in the mortgage market and ensure that mortgage brokers were properly licensed.   Currently, I am honored to have been asked to serve on the Las Vegas Planning Commission.

Why I am Running for State Senate
I believe that Nevadans are rightfully outraged by the events of the past year.   Double dipping, double dealing politicians need to be thrown out and replaced by those who believe that elected officials represent their neighbors and taxpayers, not themselves.

Unlike the majority of the Supreme Court of this State, I believe that Nevada's citizens understood exactly what they were voting for when they passed the 2/3rds majority requirement for tax increases.   I believe our people are also quite capable of making excellent decisions on the issues that impact their lives and families.   I don't believe Nevadans need or want a "nanny government."

It is time for our State government to learn to live within the boundaries the citizens have set.   That means getting their legislative work done within the 120 days that we established.   That means knowing how you are going to fund a program before you pass it.   That means understanding that raising taxes affects the people in this state and should only be done after all other options have been exhausted.   That means knowing that children should be pupils, not hostages to government bloat and political gamesmanship.

I've worked with the legislature many times and understand that laws are needed to protect consumers and businesses from those who would abuse their trust; I understand that taxes are needed to fund needed services.   I also understand that some taxes, laws and regulations simply stifle the economy and burden industries and families.   As your state senator, I would bring balance to these legislative and tax decisions.

With your support, we can make sure that our legislature represents traditional Nevada values of limited government, low taxes, a strong education system, and individual freedoms and accountabilities.
