John Mason Announces Candidacy for Supreme Court Justice
January 29, 2004
John Mason is formally announcing his candidacy for Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court, Seat E, at press conferences in Reno and Las Vegas on Thursday, January 29.
Mason will be joined by family and supporters in Reno at 10 am at the Airport Plaza Hotel on Terminal Way. He will then travel to join well-wishers in Las Vegas at the Thomas and Mack Center (Meeting Room A&B) at 2:00 pm.
An attorney and former chair of the Nevada Republican Party, Mason stated that "I have decided to seek this position because I care passionately about this state and believe there is no higher calling than working to preserve the Constitution of Nevada."
Mason indicated that he is troubled by the lack of effect the Constitution's words had in some recent Nevada Supreme Court decisions, particularly the ruling last summer that set aside a constitutional provision specifying that a 2/3rds majority of the Legislature is needed to pass a tax increase. "In effect, the Court directed the Legislature to take the very action that the people, through their lawfully-passed Constitutional amendment, prohibited," Mason noted.
Initially, Mason' campaign is focusing on his commitment to "give the plain meaning of our Constitution its full judicial force."
"The people of Nevada deserve seven justices who are absolutely committed to upholding the people's law," Mason said, adding "This is the primary responsibility of the Court; therefore, it will be the first and primary focus of my campaign." Mason indicated that he will discuss other issues later during the campaign as well. Return to press release page |
